Wanna get your hands in some of the graphics used in Modern Warfare 2? Then read on, but be aware… this is the geeky section of my blog 😛

How Do I Do?

  • Decompress the image files from your MW2 game.
  • Convert the MW2 image files to DDS image files.
  • Open, view and possibly save the file as a jpg, gif or png file.

Requirements

  1. Modern Warfare 2 program files
  2. Free jZip or some other zip program
  3. Free Irfanview + plugins or Adobe Photoshop + DDS plugin
  4. IWI to DDS converter

1. If you have installed the game, you’ll probably find them by navigating to C:\Program Files\steam\SteamApps\common\call of duty modern warfare 2\main.

2. You can download jZip on http://www.jzip.com/.

3. You can download Irfanview on http://www.irfanview.com/main_download_engl.htm.
Download the Irfanview plugin on http://www.irfanview.com/plugins.htm.
Download the Photoshop DDS plugin on http://developer.nvidia.com/object/photoshop_dds_plugins.html#downloads.

4. I found a functional IWI-to-DSS converter on a russian forum. You can download it below, but before you do, be sure to right-click the link and select Save Target As or it won’t work.
Download iwi2dds-eng-zip1.pdf
The file is a zip file camouflaged as a PDF file. Rename the file to iwi2dss-eng.zip.

Preparations

  • Learn the path to the main folder in your MW2 game.
  • Make sure you have zip program and graphic editor installed.
  • Decompress the IWI-to-DDS converter.
  • Possibly make a working folder for your MW2 graphics.

Explore and Convert Graphics From Modern Warfare 2

Start jZip, choose Open Archive and navigate to the MW2 main folder. Set Files of type to All Files. Select any IWD file you wish and click Open.

Extract any IWI files you wanna explore to your working folder.

Convert your IWI files to DDS files by dragging a IWI file on top of the converter named iwi2dds.exe. Hit any key to close the commando prompt.

View the DDS file in your graphic editor. You can convert it to a standard image file by saving it as png, jpg or gif.
